How Wagering Requirements Work

By Big Spins Bonus Editorial TeamPublished 2 June 2026Updated 20 August 20265 min read

A wagering requirement (sometimes called a rollover or playthrough requirement) is the number of times you must bet the value of a bonus, or a bonus plus your deposit, before any winnings from that bonus become withdrawable. It's usually written as a multiplier, such as 35x.

For example, a 35x wagering requirement on a £20 bonus means you would need to place £700 in total bets before bonus-related winnings could be withdrawn. The requirement — and which games count towards it — varies significantly between operators, which is why it's one of the most important terms to check before opting in to any offer.

Not all games contribute equally. Slots often count 100% towards wagering, while table games like blackjack or roulette may count at a much lower rate (sometimes 10% or less), because they typically have a lower house edge. Live casino games are frequently excluded altogether.

Other details worth checking include the maximum bet allowed while wagering is in progress (exceeding it can void your bonus), the time limit to clear the requirement, and whether the requirement applies to the bonus only or to the bonus plus your deposit.

Wagering requirements are not inherently unfair — they exist so operators can offer promotions sustainably — but they vary widely in how player-friendly they are. Always check an operator's full terms and conditions before claiming a bonus, and only wager money you can afford to lose.
